Why It’s Important to Build a Business That Supports Your Lifestyle

By  Melissa Etherton

Congratulations, and welcome to this fantastic lifestyle business breakthrough event!

If you're ready to build a business that supports your lifestyle AND practically runs itself, you’re in the right place!

There are essential factors that you will want to consider when building a business that gives you time freedom and supports your lifestyle - rather than treating your business as if it’s just another job - we have the opportunity to get creative and curious about how we can build our business inside a new context.

As visionary women, our business is an extension of ourselves, our ideas, our passions and life purpose. And our goal is to design it in a way that also supports our personal needs and life goals.

You really can build a business around your life that provides enough income to do the things that matter to you. If you want to travel, you can build a flexible business that allows you to travel. If you want to focus on raising your children, you can do that while creating a company that supports that choice.

If you are overcoming a personal tragedy, loss, or sudden change in your life, you can choose to build a business that leaves time and space for you to heal, rest, and protect your energy. And, if you want to build a 40 hour a week job that brings in the cash, you can do that too.

The options are incredible today due to fast internet connections and technology.

Determine the Lifestyle You Want to Live

Take some time to explore what you really want out of life. Grab a pen and piece of paper or your journal (and yes, paper and pen is better than digital) and explore this journal prompt:

✨Describe your perfect day. From the moment you wake up, till the second you close your eyes in blissful sleep, what happens in your perfect day?

Picture yourself living that perfect day. What brings you joy? What are you doing? Who do you see? Who do you talk to? How many hours are you working? What kind of work are you doing? How many hours of sleep do you get? What are you doing for fun and relaxation? Where are you? At home? On the road? Traveling?

Call in your future self and let her guide you. Sit in a comfortable chair or lay down and let your brain fantasize. Play pretend. Let it flow. No judgment and no limiting beliefs aloud.

After you've thought it through and let it play out, write it down. There is no right or wrong answer. It is, after all, your life and only a small piece of this big puzzle we're putting together.

What Do You Really Care About?

One way to craft a life that you love living is to focus on the things you're passionate about and enjoy doing.

  • What is something you really love?
  • What hobby or pastime do you want in your life?
  • What's something new you'd like to learn? A second or third language perhaps? Maybe you want to take singing lessons? Or master archery (or is that just me?)?
  • Who are the people you would like to help or serve?
  • What skills do you already know to support that vision?  And ...
  • What skills are you willing to develop to support that lifestyle?

Brainstorm Your Business Ideas

Combining your dream lifestyle with your passions will help you find the ideal business for you. If you already have a business, that's great. You can make micro-adjustments toward your lifestyle goals as you uncover and develop them more fully.

Remember though, you may need to change some of your thoughts as you go through this event. For example, if you want to travel a lot, being an English Teacher online needing a reliable internet connection will need some creative problem solving.

But let me tell you as one who has been on the road camping while running an online business, it is absolutely possible. I did it (and I'll be heading out on a new road adventure in the near future). Thousands of people are doing it. You can too.

Research Your Ideas

From your brainstorming, you may have come up with a few ideas. Make sure you research them. Do a Google search or check YouTube. Chances are someone out there is already doing it and learning from what they're doing will help jumpstart your lifestyle business plans.

If you can get a clear view of the day in the life of someone who does the business you envision for yourself, it will help you know what's involved and how you can support yourself to achieve it.

Create a Business Plan

Once you have the bigger picture of your business idea, it will help you to create a business plan. Even a one-page plan can help you get organized.

I'm not talking about those long exhaustive reports that you would present to a bank. I'm talking about allowing yourself to brain dump all the ideas you have. Include your value proposition, your solution, the competition, your perfect-fit clients and customers, your sales and marketing ideas, your budget and sales goals, milestones you plan to experience, team and resources, and any funding needs (if your company should need it) should all be added to your brain dump.

This gives you a place to start. Remember, to give yourself room to not know. You don't need to know it all and you don't need to know the how.

Even if no one looks at it, your plan will help you see the bigger picture. And you will also clearly see which areas need more attention and more of your time to flesh out.

We will be looking at many of these areas during this event, so just know that support and guidance is here and we're going to get you started.

Automate, Systemize, and Outsource, Oh My!

Once you know what needs to be done to create the product, service, or program, you will need to begin the learning process around automations, systems, and outsourcing.

But you're in luck, because this is what I do. This is my specialty.

Creating robust automations and systems is one of the many services I've been providing online entrepreneurs since 2013. Ideally, we want to implement as many systems, automations, and workflows in our business as possible because that frees up our time and energy.

Having more time and energy means you can focus more attention on what you love in your business: your clients and customers, instead of in your business running operations.

Our ultimate goal - a business that practically runs itself so that you can live the lifestyle you desire.

Please share in the Facebook group what you've learned about yourself and your business. I will be in the Facebook group every day to answer your questions and support your growth.

Till tomorrow,
Be brilliant.
Be imperfect.
And always, be you.

Melissa
