Group Coaching Vs. One-On-One Coaching – Things to Consider

By  Melissa Etherton

We're continuing our conversation from yesterday about private and group coaching.

Let’s get into the main differences so you can create the offer that best fits your ideal business structure. Remember, it doesn't have to be one or the other, it could be both. Although, if you're just getting started, I recommend you choose one offer for now.

Then there's also the option of creating your own customized hybrid coaching package that offers some one-to-one and group coaching. I have found this to be the best fit to meet my financial needs and protect my time, location, and energy boundaries.

There are many things to consider for both, and we're going to go through the main points here. Both income streams are at the top of the "income stream list" because they offer a fast way to get started and with the right structure, they can grow and scale into a 7-figure business.

But first, we want to make sure you are considering all of your needs and boundary statements as you go into planning your coaching offer. It's important to think it through before you start promising certain features or bonuses in your coaching package.

Here are the main things to consider:

WHAT IS YOUR INTENTION?

Let me first ask you: Is your intention in this present moment, to work deeply with one person at a time guiding them through a personal transformation? If you're looking to offer depth work, then one-to-one coaching is probably the best fit.

Or do you see yourself holding small group sessions where you reach more people? Perhaps it doesn't exactly look like coaching.  Maybe it's a women's circle, a book club, an implementation workshop, or an intimate virtual retreat. If this is your intention, group coaching could be the best option.

Group Coaching is Easier to Scale

If you want to make more impact, one of the best things to do is to start a group coaching program. It’s much easier to scale, but the caveat is, it can be more challenging to fill the group when you're first starting.

You can leverage technology to help you deliver content, information, emails, group session recordings, etc. without needing to have a set schedule every week for individual calls. Instead, you could have your group sessions once per week, every two weeks, or even once per month.

For example: Let's say you want to have 5 clients, in a one-to-one structure that would take you 5 hours (assuming they get 60-minute calls) per week. In a group coaching structure, you could deliver one 2-hour session per week. Giving you back 3 hours of your time. This model allows you to accommodate more people with less of your time.

For group coaching you would charge less than private coaching, but you have the opportunity to serve more people. Continuing with the example: You could increase the number of spots for your 2 hour session and have 10 clients on the call. Or you could host two 2-hour sessions a week serving 5 clients per call. This allows you to have 10 clients enrolled and deliver your content in 4 hours per week.

Group Coaching is More Practical

Group coaching programs tend to be more practical regarding your time and energy, as expressed in the example above. However, it does not take an individual into account in the same way one-to-one coaching can. It is harder (and usually not the goal) to take each individual on a deep experience. Instead, in group coaching the individuals benefit greatly from being part of the collective and learning from each other.

Group Coaching Prepares People for Private Coaching

A great benefit of group coaching is that it prepares the individual for a one-on-one coaching experience. Because group coaching cannot offer the same depth work as one-on-one coaching, many people who have success in a group coaching container want to go deeper and have a greater transformation with one-on-one coaching.

Private Coaching is More Tactical

One of the best parts of private coaching is the effect a private coach can have on the client's mindset. Private coaching is such deep work, that many clients can experience a very profound transformation. The downside of private coaching is it's harder to scale because your schedule will become fully booked out and then you'll need a growth plan . And how do you grow when your schedule is full?

Private Coaching Takes More of Your Time

The main consideration with coaching one-on-one is the time commitment. There are only so many hours in the day. The only way to scale this type of business is to hire other coaches to teach your program to more clients, but this is often not very effective unless you're able to establish yourself in a narrow-enough (but not too narrow) niche where there's plenty of clients AND you position yourself to be the go-to-coach in this niche or your process is unlike others out there.

Private Coaching is More Personalized

As a one-to-one coach you're able to personalize your approach based on your client’s specific needs and response to your content. This can pave the way for a highly transformational experience for your client and exponential growth for you. As you adapt and customize your program, your skills and expertise will widen and deepen making you a much more POWERFUL coach!

TO WRAP UP

Both types of coaching are effective ways to work with clients. While the client might get more time from the coach with individual coaching, sometimes having the group to work with can be a better fit because they have each other for support and to bounce ideas around.

Both types of coaching offer clients opportunities to work through their growth edges and reach their goals in a way that works best for them.

Please share in the Facebook group what you've learned about yourself and your business. I will be in the Facebook group every day to answer your questions and support your growth.

Till tomorrow,

Be brilliant.

Be imperfect.

And always, be you.
